I want to clear this up first because it trips people up constantly: switching to an all-meat diet does not give you a different metabolism, and it does not require a special formula. Every mainstream TDEE calculation — Mifflin-St Jeor, Harris-Benedict, Katch-McArdle — estimates your basal metabolic rate from your body stats, then multiplies it by an activity factor. None of those equations has an input for 'diet type,' because the first law of thermodynamics doesn't care whether your 2,200 calories arrived as steak or as oatmeal. A pound of body fat stores roughly the same energy no matter what you ate to gain or lose it.

Where carnivore does nudge one of those components is the thermic effect of food. Protein costs your body more to digest and process than carbohydrate or fat — roughly 20–30% of protein's calories are burned off in digestion, versus 5–10% for carbs and 0–3% for fat. An all-meat diet is protein- and fat-dominant, so its blended thermic effect tends to sit a little higher than a mixed diet's. This is real but modest: it might raise your effective TDEE by 50–150 calories a day, not enough to rewrite your targets, but enough to explain why some people find fat loss slightly easier on higher protein even at matched calories. The other thing worth naming is that no TDEE calculator is precise to begin with — the equations carry a margin of error of roughly ±10% for any individual, because they can't see your exact muscle mass, hormone status, or how much you actually move. That's true on carnivore and off it. So treat the number the calculator hands you as a well-educated starting estimate, not a measured fact. You confirm or correct it the same way regardless of diet: eat at the estimate for two to three weeks, track your weight trend, and adjust the target up or down by 100–150 calories based on what the scale actually did.
The real challenge: estimating calories without labels
Here's the actual difficulty of tracking carnivore, and it has nothing to do with metabolism. A boxed snack tells you it's 190 calories per serving. A ribeye tells you nothing. You cut it off a larger piece, you cooked it in its own fat plus a knob of butter, some of that fat rendered out into the pan, and now you're supposed to know what you ate. Most food-tracking apps were built around packaged foods and barcodes, and whole cuts of meat are exactly where they're weakest.
The fix is to weigh raw and think in a few reliable rules of thumb rather than chasing false precision. Fatty red meat — ribeye, 80/20 ground beef, lamb chops, pork belly — lands around 250–290 calories per 100 g raw. Leaner cuts like sirloin, chicken breast, or white fish sit closer to 110–165 calories per 100 g. Eggs are almost exactly 70–80 calories each. Once you have those anchors memorized, you can estimate a whole day in your head without opening an app, which is one of carnivore's quiet advantages: the food list is short and repetitive, so your mental database gets accurate fast.
Two things throw people off. First, cooking fat you add counts — a tablespoon of butter or tallow is ~100–110 calories, and three of those across a day is a real 300+ calories that never shows up if you only log the meat. Second, fat that renders out and gets left in the pan does not count, so logging a raw 250 g ribeye slightly overstates what you actually ate. These roughly cancel for most people, which is why weighing raw and logging the added fats separately gets you within about ±10% — plenty accurate for steering toward a goal.
If you don't want to weigh at all, hand and plate estimates work surprisingly well on carnivore precisely because the food list is so short. A palm-sized portion of cooked meat is roughly 4–6 oz for most people, a thumb of butter or fat is about a tablespoon, and an egg is an egg. You lose a little accuracy versus a scale, but the repetitive nature of the diet means your eyeball calibrates within a couple of weeks — far faster than it would on a varied mixed diet where every meal is a new estimation problem. The goal isn't perfection; it's a number consistent enough to tell whether last week's intake was above or below your maintenance line.

What 30 days of logging an all-meat diet actually looked like
For 30 days in early 2025 I ran an all-meat diet as an experiment — partly curiosity, partly because I wanted to understand the tracking problem before writing about it. I'm not a carnivore evangelist and I went back to a mixed diet afterward, but the logging exercise taught me more about estimating calories without labels than years of scanning barcodes had.
My TDEE at the time worked out to about 2,200 calories (I'm a 5'6" woman, mid-30s, lifting three times a week, which the calculator on this page pegs at roughly that). I didn't try to hit a number — I ate to appetite and just recorded everything on a kitchen scale, weighing every cut raw and logging added butter and tallow separately. At the end of the month my measured intake averaged around 2,050 calories a day, a little under maintenance, which matched the ~1.5 lb the scale drifted down over the four weeks. That's the part that surprised me: I never once felt like I was dieting, yet the high protein and fat kept me full enough that I naturally undershot maintenance by ~150 calories. The satiety effect was not a myth.
The method that made it work was boring. I built a mental shortlist — ribeye ~610, two eggs ~150, 6 oz ground beef ~430 — and most days were just some combination of those plus the butter I cooked in. Setting a maintenance or deficit target while eating carnivore
Once the calculator gives you a TDEE, the goal-setting is identical to any other diet — carnivore just changes how you'll execute it, not the arithmetic. To maintain, eat at your TDEE. If my maintenance is 2,200, a 20% deficit is about 1,760 calories, which on carnivore might look like two moderate meals plus eggs rather than three large fatty ones.
The practical wrinkle is that carnivore is naturally low-carb, so your first week on the scale will drop faster than fat loss alone — you shed glycogen and the water bound to it, often 2–4 lb that has nothing to do with body fat. Don't read that as your real rate; judge progress by the weekly average after week two, exactly as you would on any diet. And because meat is so satiating, plenty of people accidentally end up in a deficit without trying, which is fine if fat loss is the goal but worth watching if it isn't — undereating protein and total calories for months isn't free.
One genuine carnivore-specific consideration is the protein-to-fat ratio, since those are your only two energy levers.
